PLAYERS OF THE WEEK March 17, 2003 BASEBALL PLAYER RYAN MARCOS ~ Azusa Pacific University Junior ~ Infielder ~ Chino, California Ryan Marcos was 5-for-9 (.556) at the plate as Azusa Pacific split its games last week. For the week, he recorded 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. In the loss to Biola, he hit a solo home run. In the win against Massachusetts-Dartmouth, Marcos was 4-for-5 (.800) at the plate with 2 doubles, 1 home run, 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. BASEBALL PITCHER JOHN CARREON ~ Concordia Senior ~ RHP ~ Tucson, Arizona John Carreon pitched a complete game and earned the win as Concordia defeated conference foe Vanguard for the first time in 23 months, breaking a 10-game losing streak. In 9 innings of work, he gave up 7 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) and 1 walk, while striking out 6 batters. He gave up 1 earned run (1.29 ERA), 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 7 in the win over conference foe Concordia. BASEBALL PLAYER Freshman ~ Shortstop ~ Riverside, California Eric Harryman was 13-for-20 (.650) at the plate with 6 runs, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 4 RBI as California Baptist won all 5 of its games last week, including 3 conference games. In the win against Indiana-Southeast, he was 3-for-5 (.600) at the plate with a triple, 2 runs and 2 RBI. In the win over Vanguard, he was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with 1 double, 1 home run, 2 runs and 1 RBI. In the doubleheader wins against Azusa Pacific, Harryman was 4-for-7 (.571) at the plate with 2 doubles. BASEBALL PITCHER GARY GALLEGOS ~ Biola University Junior ~ LHP ~ Riverside, California In his only appearance of the week, Gary Gallegos threw 8.1 innings of 1 hit, 1 run ball for a 1.08 ERA as No. 14-ranked Biola defeated No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene. In the win, Gallegos gave up 4 walks while striking out 13 batters. BASEBALL PLAYER MATT PARRISH ~ Biola University Junior ~ Right Fielder ~ Yorba Linda, California Matt Parrish was 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate with 5 runs, 1 double, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 8 RBI as No. 15-ranked Biola won 3 out of 4 games last week. In the win against CS San Bernardino, he scored 3 runs, hit 2 home runs and recorded 4 RBI. In the first win against Vanguard, he hit was a 3-run homer. In the second game of the doubleheader, Parrish hit a triple. He drew a couple of walks which improved his on-base percentage to .500. Parrish was named the NAIA Region II Baseball Player of the Week. BASEBALL PITCHER ANDY ALSTOT ~ Azusa Pacific University Senior ~ RHP ~ Somis, California In a complete-game appearance, Andy Alstot did not allow a run, gave up 2 hits and 1 walk, and struck out 6 batters as Azusa Pacific defeated GSAC-leading Point Loma Nazarene 1-0. Alstot had a perfect game through 4.1 innings and a no-hitter through 5.2 innings. Alstot was selected as the NAIA Region II Baseball Pitcher of the Week. A BASEBALL PLAYER CARL GALLOWAY ~ Biola University Sophomore ~ DH/First Base ~ Carlsbad, California Carl Galloway was 8-for-15 (.533) at the plate with 9 runs, 1 triple, 4 home runs and 14 RBI as No. 8-ranked Biola won all of 4 of its games last week. In the win at Westmont, he scored 3 runs, hit a triple and batted in 2 runs. In the win at No. 17 Point Loma Nazarene, he had 2 home runs and 5 RBI. In the sweep of California Baptist, Galloway was 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate with 4 runs, 2 homers, and 7 RBI. BASEBALL PITCHER RYAN KLATT ~ Biola University Junior ~ RHP ~ Midland, Texas Ryan Klatt pitched a total of 8.1 innings in 2 games without giving up a run. For the week, he gave up 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 10. In the win at Westmont, he recorded his first win in his first start of the season. In 3 innings of relief at California Baptist, he gave up only 1 hit while striking out 5. April CARL GALLOWAY ~ Biola University Carl Galloway was 9-for-17 (.529) at the plate with 5 runs, 3 doubles, 2 home runs and 6 RBI as No. 8-ranked Biola won all of 4 of its games last week and extended its winning streak to 11. In the win over Cal Poly Pomona, he recorded a double, a home run, 2 runs and 3 RBI. In the win over UC San Diego, he had a double and 2 RBI. In the win at CS Stanislaus, he had a double and scored a run. In the win at CS Hayward, Galloway was 3-for-5 (.600) with a solo home run. Galloway is currently on a 22-game hitting streak. BASEBALL PITCHER GARY GALLEGOS ~ Biola University Junior ~ LHP ~ Riverside, California Gary Gallegos pitched a complete-game shutout in Biola's defeat of Cal Poly Pomona. He gave up 3 hits and walked 2 while striking out 8. April MATT DZAMA ~ Azusa Pacific University Senior ~ Outfielder ~ Glendora, California Matt Dzama was 4-for-11 (.364) at the plate with 4 runs, 2 home runs and 4 RBI as Azusa Pacific won all 3 of its games last week. He hit a game-winning 2-run homer to break a 1-1 tie with Pomona-Pitzer. He scored 2 runs in the first game at Concordia. Dzama also hit a solo home run in the second game to sweep Concordia. BASEBALL PITCHER KELLY STRICKLAND ~ Azusa Pacific University Junior ~ RHP ~ San Jose, California In 7.1 innings of play last week, Kelly Strickland did not allow a run, giving up 3 hits while walking 4 and striking out 4. He retired all 3 batters he faced in the first inning of the Cougars' win over Pomona-Pitzer.
