March 13, 2006 BASEBALL PLAYER STEVE GOINS ~ California Baptist University Sophomore ~ 5-11 ~ SS ~ Riverside, California Sophomore Steve Goins hit .438 (7-for-16) with 4 doubles and 7 RBIs to lead the Lancers to a 3-1 week. Their lone loss of the week was to the NAIA's No. 3-ranked Biola, 2-1, which was their first loss of the season. He also tossed 6 innings of relief, allowing just 2 hits and one run while striking out 9 to pick up the win in the Lancers' 6-2 victory over Azusa Pacific in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. BASEBALL PITCHER ROSS STOUT ~ California Baptist University Senior ~ 6-0 ~ RHP ~ Palm Desert, California Senior Ross Stout was dominating in his lone appearance of the week. After the Lancers dropped their first game of the season, 2-1 to Biola, Stout and the Lancers bounced right back with a 6-1 win over the Eagles the very next day. In that game, Stout tossed 7 innings, scattering 5 hits and giving up one unearned run. He also struck out 7 compared to just one walk. BASEBALL PLAYER AARON SEUSS ~ California Baptist University Junior ~6-1 ~ OF ~ La Quinta, California Junior Aaron Seuss was .533 (8-for-15) at the plate with 6 runs, 8 RBIs, 2 doubles, 3 home runs and 2 stolen bases as No. 2-ranked California Baptist won 3 of 4 games last week. In the win over Simpson, he had 5 RBIs on 2 home runs. In the split with Vanguard, Seuss hit .556 (5-for-9) with 3 runs, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Seuss was chosen as the NAIA Region II Baseball Player of the Week. BASEBALL PITCHER CLAY BROWN ~ Vanguard University Senior ~ 6-1 ~ RHP ~ Dana Point, California Senior Clay Brown recorded a 1.17 ERA in 15.1 innings of work for Vanguard last week. He held No. 6-ranked Point Loma Nazarene to 1 earned run in 6 plus innings as the Lions dropped a 2-1 decision on the road. He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 6. Brown pitched a complete game in Vanguard's 3-1 win over No. 2 California Baptist, only their second loss of the season. He held the Lancers' offense to 9 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 5. Brown was named the NAIA Region II Baseball Pitcher of the Week. March 27, 2006 BASEBALL PLAYER NICK DIETZEN ~ Biola University Junior ~ 6-3 ~ 1B ~ Moses Lake, Washington Junior Nick Dietzen was 10-for-21 (.476) at the plate with 5 runs, 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 8 RBI as Biola won 4-of-5 games last week. In the loss to The Master's, which was the completion of a game started last month, he had 2 doubles and 2 RBI. In the doubleheader sweep of The Master's that followed, Dietzen had 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 home runs and 5 RBI. In the doubleheader sweep at Azusa Pacific, he had 3 hits, 1 run, 2 doubles, and 1 RBI. Dietzen was chosen as the NAIA Region II Baseball Player of the Week. BASEBALL PITCHER JARED ESKEW ~ Point Loma Nazarene Freshman ~ 6-2 ~ LHP ~ Bakerfield, California Freshman Jared Eskew struck out 11 batters while shutting out No. 2-ranked California Baptist for 7 innings to pick up the win. He gave up 9 hits, but did not allow an earned run or a walk. Eskew was named the NAIA Region II Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Ap BASEBALL PLAYER MIKE SWAIN ~ California Baptist University Senior ~ 6-1 ~ OF ~ San Clemente, California Senior Mike Swain hit .538 (7-for-13) with 6 runs, 5 RBI, 1 double and 2 home runs as No. 2-ranked California Baptist won 3-of-4 games last week. In the second game against No. 5 Biola, he was 3-for-3 with 3 runs, 1 home run and 2 doubles. In the sweep of Fresno Pacific, Swain was 4-for-7 (.571) with 3 runs, 3 RBI, 1 double and 1 home run. Swain was chosen as the NAIA Region II Baseball Player of the Week. JIMMY JOHNSON ~ Biola University Sophomore ~ 6-0 ~ LHP ~ La Mirada, California Sophomore Jimmy Johnson gave up 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9 in 7.2 innings of work for No. 5-ranked Biola. Johnson struck out 8 and earned the win over No. 2 California Baptist. Against Vanguard, he struck out the lone batter he faced. Johnson has now pitched 20.2 scoreless innings. Johnson was named the NAIA Region II Baseball Pitcher of the Week. BASEBALL PLAYER MATT VOORHIES ~ Vanguard University Junior ~ 6-3 ~ RF ~ Wenatchee, Washington Junior Matt Voorhies hit .500 (6-for-12) at the plate with 2 runs, 1 triple, 1 homerun, 2 RBI, 2 walks and 1 stolen base as Vanguard went 3-1 for the week. He had an on-base percentage of .625 and accumulated 11 total bases. In the split with Fresno Pacific, he had 2 hits including 1 triple, 1 run and 1 walk. In the sweep of The Master's, Voorhies was 4-for-5 (.800) with 1 run 1, home run and 2 RBI. Voorhies was chosen as the NAIA Region II Baseball Player of the Week.
BASEBALL PLAYER CHARLIE DOUGLAS ~ Concordia University Senior ~ 6-0 ~ 3B ~ Chino Hills, California Senior Charlie Douglas was 3-for-9 (.333) at the plate with 3 runs, 1 walk, 1 double, 1 home run, and 3 RBI as Concordia defeated No. 12-ranked Point Loma Nazarene in both games last week. He had a double that ignited a 4-run inning and singled in a run in the 8-3 win in the first game. Douglas hit what held up as the game-winning 3-run home run in a 7-5 victory. Concordia has moved into third place in the GSAC. Douglas was chosen as the NAIA Region II Baseball Player of the Week. BASEBALL PITCHER KYLE THOMAS ~ California Baptist University Junior ~ 6-0 ~ LHP ~ Riverside, California Junior Kyle Thomas came on in relief against No. 4-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma City to pick up the win for No. 3 California Baptist. In 6 innings of work, Thomas did not give up an earned run or a walk while striking out 11 of 18 batters. Thomas was selected as the NAIA Region II Baseball Pitcher of the Week. April 24, 2006 BASEBALL PLAYER JOSH BANDA ~ California Baptist University Junior ~ 6-2 ~ C ~ Lakewood, California Junior Josh Banda was 7-for-13 (.538) at the plate with 3 runs, 2 walks, 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 4 RBI as No. 2-ranked California Baptist went 3-for-4 in the GSAC last week. In the doubleheader sweep of Westmont, Banda was 5-for-6 with 2 runs, 2 doubles, 1 home run and 2 RBI. In the split with No. 20 Concordia, he had 2 hits, 1 run, 1 double and 2 RBI. Banda was chosen as the NAIA Region II Baseball Player of the Week. BASEBALL PITCHER JON CONLEY ~ Concordia University Junior ~ 5-11 ~ RHP ~ Monrovia, California Junior Jon Conley went the distance allowing only 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 8 to give No. 20-ranked Concordia a win in the second game of the doubleheader sweep of The Master's. Conley was named the NAIA Region II Baseball Pitcher of the Week. AARON SEUSS ~ California Baptist University Junior ~ 6-1 ~ LF ~ La Quinta, California Junior Aaron Seuss was 8-for-19 (.421) at the plate with 6 runs, 3 homers and 9 RBI as No. 3-ranked California Baptist won the last 4 games of its regular season. In the doubleheader sweep of Vanguard, he was 5-for-11 (.455) with 3 runs, 1 home run and 4 RBI. In the second game at Azusa Pacific, Seuss had 3 runs, 2 home runs and 5 RBI. He leads the GSAC with 19 homers and 79 RBI. Seuss was chosen as the NAIA Region II Baseball Player of the Week. BASEBALL PITCHER ROSS STOUT ~ California Baptist University Senior ~ 6-0 ~ RHP ~ Palm Desert, California Senior Ross Stout pitched 8.2 innings to earn the win against Azusa Pacific. He gave up 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 earned run while striking out 12 batters. California Baptist currently has a 7-game winning streak and has won 10 of the past 11. Stout was selected as the NAIA Region II Baseball Pitcher of the Week. BRANDON KAWAL ~ Concordia University Junior ~ 6-3 ~ OF ~ Phelan, California Junior Brandon Kawal was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a stolen base as No. 21-ranked Concordia defeated Point Loma Nazarene in both teams' final regular-season game before they head to the NAIA Region II Baseball Tournament. Kawal drove in the game-winning runs with a 2-RBI single to help Concordia to a 4-3 win in the season finale and a 4-game season sweep of the Sea Lions. BASEBALL PITCHER JOHN TUNDIS ~ Concordia University Senior ~ 6-0 ~ LHP ~ Upland, California Senior John Tundis finished the regular season undefeated (7-0) with a win over Point Loma Nazarene, helping the Eagles to their first 30-win season in program history.
